About Homesick for WDW

Disney obsessed, I'm always looking for ways to stay connected to WDW and to all things Disney. WDW Radio Box Person. The countdown has begun on the move to the mouse!

Moving

It will happen. It has to happen. For so many reasons. Some selfish, some economical. Orlando, FL is our destination. Our final destination. Not sure how or when (although we do have somewhat of a time frame), we’re going to move to Florida.

It’s not something we just thought about on a whim. It takes some reasoning to move your family over a 1000 miles away. Away from a place you know so well. Where you spent the first 51yrs of your life at. But all good things must come to an end! I will be getting away from one of the most expensive places to live in the country. Where taxes are drowning us. Taxes that will never, ever go down. It’s an unsustainable cycle. And as I’ve gotten older, I’ve grown to despise the cold, the snow and ice.

Now, I’m not so blinded that I don’t understand there will be challenges. I know nothing is perfect. The grass is not always greener. But that’s what research is for. That’s what talking to countless locals are for. We just got back from WDW. Almost every person I met, whether they rung me up at the local Publix, or server at a restaurant, I asked how they like living in Orlando. Most were transplants themselves. Every single one of them loved living there.

I am unsure about, selling my house, buying another (or renting), or finding a job. I’m taking a huge leap of faith. Like others have before me. But the one thing I’ll have, that I can’t get here, is my Disney. Yes, a huge motivation on our destination.  A place where I’m very comfortable. A place that I know very well. A place I feel like I’m home.

In less than a year, a new chapter begins.

That’s it for now. See you real soon!

The Experience

Just came back from another fantastic WDW vacation with my family. It happened to be our 10th year going with my kids. We also had my niece and son’s girlfriend with us. This year I was able to meet up with friends who I have only known through social media. A weird concept for my family.

It is becoming more and more obvious, with every trip, that we just don’t go to WDW just to ride Haunted Mansion or Pirates or Soarin’. Don’t get me wrong, those are MUST do’s for us, but I am just as happy to taking in the sights, sounds and aromas of well…everything!

WDW is not just a place where we go, to go on rides. It’s a place that we experience the magic that is Disney. I absolutely love the tiny details. The architecture, the placement of decorations, the way the different types of concrete, brick or stone fall under my feet. The way the music changes depending on where you are. The different aromas, the cleanliness, etc.

We stayed at the Animal Kingdom Lodge DVC in Jambo House for the first time. One night we just went down to that huge beautiful lobby and just sat. Took it all in. Talk about detail in the architecture. One night we got back late and there were about 6 AK cast members down by Boma playing a beat on the drums and dancing. They had a crowd down there and above them in the lobby smiling and mesmerized. They even grabbed a few people and showed them some steps. Everyone applauded when it was over. That was an experience.

So the next time someone goes on to you about how Walt Disney World is just a place for kids to go on kiddie rides, let them know they are missing out on so much more. They’re missing out on the experience.

That’s it for now. See ya real soon!.

Kids pictures

Was just looking at pictures we have around the house. Almost all of them are of us and the kids at Walt Disney World. It’s funny, we rarely take pictures of our family unless we’re at WDW.

Looking at all those pictures on our walls, and seeing my kids at various ages is a reminder at how much WDW has been such a big part of them growing up. They are growing, and have grown, up with Disney as a part of their lives. They will always have memories from our trips. It’s a ritual for them now. And just because they’re older now, it has not diminished their desire to go.

It’s amazing that one brand, Disney, can be such an important part of ones family. They say they create memories, and they have accomplished that with our family. And I have no doubt that when my kids have their own families, they will be bringing them and creating their own memories too. That is, with grandpa and grandma in those pictures too. 😉

That’s it for now. See ya real soon!

10 Years

In just 90 days, yes Disney geeks always have a count down to their next trip, we will be celebrating a milestone in our little family. It’s not a major milestone, just one that really only means something to us. 2015 will be our 10th year in a row, as a family, that we have taken a WDW trip.

For whatever reason, my parents had no desire to take us to WDW. My wife and I first went in 1991 then again in 1992. Fast forward to 2005. My wife had been trying to talk me into going on a WDW trip. I sort of pushed it off. But after she saw $40 airline tickets, yes I know, only $40 each one way!, and having a coworker who’s wife worked at Disney seasonally and giving us her discount, we couldn’t pass it up.

At the time, my daughter was 5 and my son was 12. We stayed at Coronado Springs Resort. That got us hooked! We have gone back every year since. Now it may not sound like a big deal but it has changed our family like nothing else has.

My daughter is now a 15 year old young lady in high school and my son, who is 22 who races dirt bikes, works with me at a flight school / corporate jet center and who is starting a new job with Jet Blue. They are both still incredibly excited about going to Disney. And as I’ve said before, we are now looking to move to Florida in 3 years to be, amongst other reasons, closer to WDW.

To say Disney has changed our lives is an understatement. For me, I’m always looking for ways to be more involved with the Disney experience. Whether that being this blog, starting FB groups, watching Disney podcasts or watching friends live stream from a Disney park. Disney has become a hugely passionate part of my life. And to see my family continue to love going, and going as a family, is just awesome.

I would never have thought 10 years ago with that first trip of taking our kids on their first WDW trip, would be such a huge spark in all of our lives. I would never have thought we’d  be going back year after year. And by the way, that’s how I got my “Box” name Disney05.

That’s it for now. See ya real soon!

It’s been a while

Wow! Has it really been that long since I started, and stopped, writing this blog? I’m not even sure how many of the small hand full of people are actually reading this. I think I should have paced myself. Oh well.

So, I still get homesick for WDW. And I still look for ways to get more involved and satisfy my craving for all things Disney. I did start a few FB groups. “Hidden Mickey’s in every day life”, “Smells that remind you of WDW”, “Long Islanders moving to Florida”, and “WDW Radio Box People”. And I post a “Mickey pic of the day” on my Twitter page @Disney05_.

We’ve also given ourselves a date when we put the house up for sale and move to Florida. Unfortunately, it’s not for 3 more years. My daughter has insisted on graduating with her friends. It’s gonna be a long three years because I really hate the winter and we’re being taxed out of here. But that’s for another blog. I’ve been in touch with real estate agents and have been looking on line every day for homes. Not entirely sure we want to own again but we have lots of time. Yes, it will be close enough to Disney. A huge, huge perk but not the sole reason for moving there.

So that’s it for now. I haven’t disappeared. Just regrouping in a way.

That’s it for now. See ya real soon!

Always looking

Just came home from shopping with my wife. Just happened to be at Target. We’re walking around and I realized I’m doing what I do no matter where I am. I’m searching for anything Disney related.

It’s kind of like when you buy…say a car. All of a sudden you see that same car all over the place. I think it’s the same being a Disney fan. I see Disney stuff every where. Things that don’t even pertain to me like infant stuff or kids clothes. But as I’m walking around, just browsing, not even necessarily looking for anything Disney, the second anything with Mickey Mouse or the word Disney on it comes into view, it just stands out like a sore thumb. My eyes just naturally go towards it.

You see Disney on clothes, books, toys, food items, pets supplies almost everything. That’s why I think it’s just different being a Disney fan. It’s not just the parks and movies. Strangely, it’s almost a way of life. So do you always look for Disney related things everywhere?

That’s it for now. See ya real soon!
